Germany, a country that has been a pioneer in the automotive industry. It gave us legendary manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and others are bound to have a strong history and background in motorsports. It is the country which has given us the likes of Sebastien Vettel, Wolfgang von Trips and of course, Michael Schumacher. It is also home to 2 of the most famous racetracks in the world, Hockenheimring and the legendary Nürburgring.
The German Karting Championship
In the world of motorsports on four wheels, Formula One is considered to be the final frontier. But to reach that stage, one has to start very young, that starting point is Karting. It is said that one has to start as young as possible, and kids do, as early as 3 or 4 years. As the country is rich in motorsports various karting championships are organized but the most important is the German Karting Championship. The German Karting Championship is organized and ruled by the German Motorsport Federation or DMSB (Deutsche Motor Sport Bund). DMSB is an umbrella organization for all the motorsports in Germany. All the motorsports in Germany are the undertaking of DMSB.DMSB was founded by ADAC, AvD, DMV and five other regional motorsport associations in 1997. Out of all, the ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club e.V.) is the most significant one. ADAC is Europe’s largest motoring association. It organizes major Motorsport events in Germany like Moto GP Sachsenring, Rallye Deutschland of WRC, ADAC GT Masters etc. Among these is the ADAC Formula 4 series which runs on the FIA Formula 4 regulations. It is considered an important stepping stone to F1 in Germany.
Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters – DTM
A vast number of touring car championships are also organized in Germany, with Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters a.k.a. DTM being the most prominent one. Touring Cars or Silhouette Racing Cars are race-prepped cars that bear a superficial resemblance to production cars but are mechanically different. The purpose of silhouette racing is to provide a manufacturing linkage to motorsports to attract more customers DTM is sanctioned by ITR e.V. and has races in Germany as well as parts of Europe. The drivers in DTM are a mix of old and new with various Formula One drivers also taking part. It is also used by rookies to jumpstart their single-seater racing career. The German manufacturer Porsche has its own championship known as Porsche Carrera Cup. Its German chapter is known as Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. In 2020 Carrera Cup Germany along with Carrera Cup France is participating in 24 hours of Le Mans, giving its participants the chance to showcase their talent at the international level. When talking about motorsports in Germany, the legendary Nürburgring Nordschliefe has to be mentioned. It holds famous races like 24 hours of Nürburgring, various series organized by ADAC, World RX of Germany, etc. The main highlight of this year was the comeback of Formula 1 in the form of Eifel GP. A very special thing about Nürburgring is Touristenfahrten, in which the track is open to normal people when no competitions are being organized. People are allowed to enter the Green Hell and drive with their vehicles. This is one more step to encourage motorsports. The existence of such a strong domestic motorsports culture is reflected by Germany’s dominance in international motorsports. Whether it be Formula One, Formula e WRC or Le Mans, Germany has a strong presence everywhere.
Notable German Drivers
Germany is the country that gave Formula One the driver that is considered to be the all-time greatest drive, i.e. Michael Schumacher. Well, this statement is fully debatable and you are welcomed for any debates in the comment section. Michael Schumacher was the driver who held the record number of Formula 1 world championships until this year when it was equaled by Lewis Hamilton. It would be more than apt to say that the team Scuderia Ferrari is famous because of Michael. His son Mick Schumacher is currently competing in Formula Two, and if rumors are to be believed he is set to make his Formula One debut in the year 2021. The four-time Formula One champion Sebastien Vettel, who is set to change teams in 2021 is also German. This list continues with more talents like Nico Rosberg and Nico Hulkenberg topping podiums. The German automobile giant Mercedes-Benz competes in Formula One under the team which is known as Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 and this team has dominated the Turbo Hybrid era of Formula One single-handedly. It has won all the seven constructor titles in the era till date. They also supply Power Units to other teams. In World Endurance Championship, a.k.a. WEC teams like Porsche, Mercedes, Audi and BMW give a taste of German mettle to the world. The Porsche 919 Hybrid was the LMP1 car considered to be the absolute epitome of excellence. Out of the 4 years, it competed it won 3 Drivers and 3 Constructors championships. In the world of rallying, i.e. World Rally Championship, i.e. WRC, Volkswagen Motorsport has achieved great success. The legendary driver Walter Roehl, who driving a Rear-Wheel-Drive Lancia 037. Even the All-Wheel-Drive beasts like Audi Quattro, propelled by the complex and critically acclaimed Quattro technology, that made the opponents bite the dust was also German.
