It is hard to believe that the Renault Megane is now 25 years old and from 1996 has been a reliable car for the family. Renault missed a couple of years with the Megane but resumed production again in 2016 and replaced the unflattering Renault Fluence. Megane never rose from the mid-range but always stayed there as a worthy competitor. The 6th-generation Megane looks good especially with the C-shaped daytime running lights that add a certain depth to the character of the car. Till date, Renault has sold over 200,000 units of the Megane which also comprised the 3-door, the 5-door, and the station wagon.

Renault has underpinned the 2021 Megane with the CMF platform and claims that this model is bigger than its predecessor. This platform is also seen on the Renault Kadjar, Nissan Qashqai and Espace. The chassis is also mated to MacPherson struts and a torsion beam. Renault has tried to incorporate sporty and contemporary looks which do not look to go hand-in-hand. Renault claims to have the widest tracks in the segment and has also lowered the car to give it an extra sporty feel.

On the inside, the Megane is a bit haphazard and the 8.7-inch portrait-oriented infotainment system looks very tacky and does not add that extra spark to the interior. But, the instrument console looks good with the digital speedometer in the centre and flanked by analogue dials on each side. The interiors when compared to a Volkswagen Golf, looks a bit bland. But, overall the car’s interiors look pleasant enough even though they are all blacked out.

Renault has kept the engine choices on offer very simple with 4 options, 2 diesel and 2 petrol. The 1.5-litre, dCi diesel engine pumps out 108 BHP while the 1.6-litre unit pumps out only 20 BHP more, 128 BHP. The petrol engine kicks off with a 128 BHP, 1.2-litre TCe and the range-topping 1.6-litre turbo petrol churns out 202 BHP. Renault is offering a 6-speed manual gearbox with the Megane and a 7-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission is also on the cards. Renault also plans to add a diesel-electric hybrid and a 163 BHP, 1.6-litre, twin-turbo diesel engine for the car.
